Many former Guilford County commissioners, once they step down from that office, are very quiet about local politics.
But former Chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners Jeff Phillips isn’t one of those people. On Saturday, March 20, Phillips posted a strongly worded message on his Facebook page stating that North Carolina and Guilford County should drop mask mandates and fully open up, given the current COVID-19 numbers.
Phillips began his post with “Happy First Day of Spring!” – a greeting that signifies the weather is turning warmer.
Then Phillips went on to make his case to local elected leaders and others who read his Facebook posts.
“It’s time to end the mask mandate and fully open Guilford County and the state of North Carolina. Now.” he wrote in the post. “Here are the facts: The vaccine is being widely distributed (Thanks to Operation Warp Speed and the incredible work of tons of front-line healthcare workers). COVID-19 hospitalizations in Guilford County have dropped from a peak of 270 at the end of December down to 48 within the county’s entire healthcare system as of 3/19/21 (530,000 population). COVID-19 positives are at the lowest levels since the spring of 2020. Statewide positivity rates are under 4% (5.8% 14-day average, 4.1% daily rate on 3/17/21 in Guilford County). Most importantly, the virus recovery rate continues to be approximately 99% and rising (40,467 citizens tested positive the past 12 months in Guilford County. A cumulative total of 1251 hospitalizations and 543 deaths as of 3/19/21 in Guilford County).”
Phillips was a county commissioner until December of 2020. He decided not to run for a third four-year term for the District 5 commissioners’ seat he held.
The former three-time chairman of the Board of Commissioners went on in his post to state that the county and state must “release our citizens to the freedom, personal responsibility, and pursuit of prosperity the United States of America was founded and built upon.”
“Now,” he added.
Facts do count so yes we should relax the gov’t mandate and allow the business owners to take responsibility. We the people should decide our future. Mask or no Mask should be our decision and not Bigdaddy.
Mr. Phillips should run for mayor and governor of this lazy socialist wannabe county and state.

The man is right. This whole diktat thing is unconstitutional. It’s called freedom of assembly. The LEFT has weaponized this pandemic to their benefit. Now that they have seized control of most of the Federal govt, and are dumping fiat money on their electorate; things will get better with or without their economic & social meddling. Comes next Fall, they will point to the recovery of the economy, and consolidate their power.
Unfortunately for all Americans, the Electorate is apathetic and uniformed. They will buy the message if it jives with what they were told.

As long as we have a Democratic gov.He will probably keep things locked “till the cows come home”. I don’t understand why all the states with Democrats leaders are still locking down and all RED states are open for business including schools. NC has in the past with Republicans in charge met budgets and covered things like hurricanes and other castastrophies. Why do the people of NC keep putting Democrats in charge.Everyone knows the Democratic philosophy is tax,tax,and more tax.Then they give money away to stupid causes then they come back and tax more. I think we need still to be careful, what can it hurt wearing a mask a little longer ?
Actually, wearing a mask resulted in my falling not once, but twice in two days. The cost of two ambulance rides, two ER visits, two sets of MRIs and CAT scans, several x-rays, 5 stitches over my eyebrow, serious bruising, sling for a broken collarbone, boot for a fracture in my foot, multiple follow-up visits to ortho specialists amounted to over $20,000 charged to Medicare/UHC. I wore my mask on hot and humid days with my glasses that fogged up which obstructed my field of vision causing me to not see curb cuts twice. Now my husband and cousin are afraid to let me go out anywhere alone. I’ve been COVID-free for a year and question the need for the mask every time I put it on.
Just what is “a little longer”? We were asked to wear it for 2 weeks, then a month, blah, blah. It’s been a year. I’m so done with the stupid thing after months of recovering, being told that we still have to wear it after vaccinations. I don’t know who to believe and believe no one. If you read the stats above the recovery rate is NINETY-NINE PERCENT. Why are we all so upset?
