Piedmont Discovery App Gets A Small-Town Upgrade

The Piedmont Discovery smartphone app – a joint app produced and managed by Greensboro, High Point and Guilford County – just got a lot better with new features and new details on local places to visit.  The mobile app is a park and trail locater, and on Monday, Sept. 13, the app’s makers announced that it now includes parks, trails and recreational options in Gibsonville, Jamestown, Oak Ridge, Pleasant Garden, Stokesdale and Summerfield.

County Shells Out $3.5 Million For Microsoft And Other Software

This week, Guilford County’s computing platform will get an expensive, but hopefully productive, technology bump. The county is planning to spend over $3 million in the next three years for access to Microsoft software, servers and more – and the county will also spend additional money for the “Lawson” computing system that the county has been using for years but that many employees dislike with a passion.

Let the Sept. 11 20th Anniversary Memorials Begin

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners was a lot different 20 years ago. But all of the current county commissioners remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001 extremely well, and they intend to show the memory of the tragedy the respect it deserves at the board’s Thursday, Sept. 2 meeting.  That’s the last commissioners meeting that falls before the two-decade anniversary of the terrorist attack that brought down the twin towers, and, at the meeting, the commissioners will pass a resolution honoring the memory of the dead and others who suffered.

Verizon Battleground Store Shuts Down – For Now?

You might be unpleasantly surprised if you stop by your Verizon store to get help with a phone problem or ask questions about your bill.  Verizon has been quietly closing stores “temporarily” without even so much as posting a handwritten note on the door.  Anyone who stops by the 2512 Battleground Ave. store in Greensboro, for instance, will find the doors locked and the shutters closed.

Planning Board Plans To Tinker With County Ordinances

The topics for the Guilford County Planning Board meeting in September include proposed changes to the county’s Unified Development Ordinances, and, on Thursday, Aug. 26, the county put out notice of those changes to allow people a chance to read them and speak their mind at the Planning Board’s public hearing next month.

Fort Myers NAACP Accuses Former Guilford Manager Of Racism

Former Guilford County Manager Marty Lawing no doubt put Guilford County in his mental rear-view mirror when he took a job as the city manager of Fort Myers, Florida, earlier this year. However, some in that city and in the surrounding Lee County are accusing Lawing of racially biased actions during his eight years managing Guilford County government.
