A rendering of the proposed new Guilford County Animal Shelter.  At 44,000 square feet, it is twice as large as the current shelter.  The Guilford County Board of Commissioners still has to vote to approve the funds, and estimates are between $16.5 million to $18 million, depending on add-ons, etc.

Last year, Guilford County purchased property for the new shelter at 979 Guilford College Road, which is just southwest of Greensboro and is less than two miles from the existing county shelter.  At a work session on Thursday, June 14, the commissioners discussed the project and many had questions as to why the estimated cost of the new shelter was coming in several million dollars higher than anticipated earlier in the year.  The commissioners wanted staff to come back with construction cost-saving options for the new shelter.
