NOT DIGGING QUARRY

DEAR EDITOR, Lehigh Hanson Southeast LLC, a subsidiary of German corporation Heidelberg Concrete, will soon request an operating permit from Guilford County for a rock quarry to be located on a 355-acre site in southeast Guilford County. I am a resident of Pleasant Garden in southeast Guilford County, totally opposed to the quarry, and have asked Guilford County’s Planning Board and commissioners to deny Lehigh Hanson’s operating permit request.  The chief reason for my opposition is the possibility of significant environmental damage caused by the quarry’s work. The company has a sad history of serious environmental violations in other states resulting in fines and penalties.  In California, for example, industrial wastewater, containing high levels of dangerous metals, was discharged into the San Francisco Bay; solid wastes were dumped onto the ground; and, in April 2017, they were fined for violating air quality regulations.  The estimated productive life of the proposed quarry in southeast Guilford County is at least 40 years, plenty of time for irreparable damage to be done by a company that appears to have little regard for environmental responsibility or respect for local ordinances. No quarry here. Ann Thornlow

PULL THEM ALL DOWN

DEAR EDITOR, The minority leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, wants to remove all Confederate statues from the US Capitol. Why not remove all of the statues of slave owners and Indian killers? George Washington owned black people and killed Indians. He didn’t believe in equality for men and women, or for black and white people. He believed that white, Christian men who owned property should have more rights than other people. He was a white male supremacist. Why should our government honor and support this slave master? “Our” government can do two things to support equal rights. All slave masters and Indian killers should be removed from Federal Reserve notes (our money). And we need a national law or constitutional amendment that states that all adult citizens must have the same legal, political and civil rights. Honoring some slave masters is wrong. Chuck Mann

TIME TO STAND UP

DEAR EDITOR, Is there anyone naive enough to still believe the goal is to destroy only Confederate statues? Already there are cries to blast Mount Rushmore and Stone Mountain, to destroy the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. There were no “good guys” in Charlottesville no matter what the mainstream media would have us believe. It is easy to despise the “Nazis” and white supremacists, but the antifa group has just as much to dislike about them. They are mostly paid professional revolutionaries. Karl Rove said they were students and local residents. With flamethrowers, water bottles filled with cement, balloons filled with feces and urine, baseball bats and clubs? Spare me. The antifas are anarchists, communists, socialists and anti-capitalists in favor of disbanding the police and closing the Pentagon and giving its funds to “marginalized peoples.” Demanding that our history be erased is to de-legitimize this country. This is Mao’s and Pol Pot’s “Cultural Revolution.” If our history can be rewritten, then the documents that define our country can be put on the ash heap – our Constitution and Bill of Rights destroyed. It is also a desire to wipe out Christianity and morality by portraying our founders as immoral. This is a concerted effort to destroy this country. It is not driven by useful idiots who are bused and paid to riot. It is a dedicated effort to have one world government directed mostly by George Soros. Most of the “named groups” of the rioters have ties to him. The time has come for those of us who are against violence to step up to condemn the lawlessness. Do we want to live under mob rule? It was such that destroyed the Confederate statue in Durham. It is alleged that three of the first four arrested are members of the Communist Party. They glorify Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, but do any move to these utopias? President Donald Trump didn’t cause Charlottesville, just like Bernie Sanders didn’t cause the shooting of Republicans practicing baseball. And there is nothing Trump can say that will be accepted by the left and RINOS. They must destroy him out of fear that he will “make America great again.” It is also time for our police not to be told to “stand down.” Arrests need to be made with serious jail time. Mob rule must be nipped in the bud. Identity politics, forged in the last administration, have brought us here. It is time to say this must cease. Phyllis Picklesimer

SMOKESCREEN

DEAR EDITOR, The left and the Democrats are still clinging to this fading hope of tying President Donald Trump to Russia. While Russia claims to no longer be communist, one has to wonder given how things are being run there. On a social media page, a group claiming to be part of antifa posted the following: “Let’s get one thing clear. Antifa is an Anarcho-Communist cause. Those on the left who call us ‘patriots,’ step the ***K away.” To my knowledge there has been no denial by the radical leftist group, so there must be some truth to it. Now let’s move to the recent occurrence in Durham. Notice what organization the woman arrested for putting the noose around the neck of the statue stated she belongs to – the Workers World Party. And if you look at some of these other organizations that side with the radical left, which tends to identify with and most likely receives support from the Democrat Party, you generally find the words “workers” and “party” in there together somewhere. And where is it we have seen this combination of words before, class? Anybody? That’s right; it was almost universally used by communist or socialist organizations. So Democrats have accused President Trump of colluding with a communist/socialist government and want him removed, but then turn around and support communist/socialist organizations who want to destroy this country. And they are willing to ignore that their presidential candidate blatantly and openly committed what could (at a stretch, which they are good at) be considered a near treasonous act by selling 20 percent of a militarily strategic material to a communist/socialist government that has shown less then friendly intentions towards the US. This whole anti-Confederate thing is being used as a smokescreen and excuse for these organizations to create the chaos they have long sought. Look up the true definition of socialism and what you will find is what they are. Remember that the Nazi Party was the National Socialist Party of Germany. Yes, there was racism in the form of attempted genocide, but you also need to look at what else was happening under them. The use of fear and intimidation used by the party to mold the people’s thinking and actions. Any of it look or sound familiar? If not, just look at college campuses and these counter-protests. Now does it sound familiar? Go Galt and save the republic. Alan Marshall

STADIUM HAZARD

DEAR EDITOR, Reading articles opposing the downtown High Point stadium, the opponents are absolutely right about not putting stadium near our hospital. I’d hate to see an ambulance trying to get through these already over crowded streets. Publix chose the right area for their business, thus allowing growth in older areas, and not tying up the streets and highways to High Point Regional Hospital. There’s plenty of property on West Dayton and West State avenues and Long Street available to build the stadium, thus saving the land for our hospital, doctors, their offices and their patients. It’s obvious the land in question is needed for High Point Regional due to growth in High Point. What if you or a member of your family needed an ambulance to carry you to High Point Regional Hospital to get help and had to wait for several lines of traffic (on both sides of the road) to move and you couldn’t get through in ample time? Doesn’t it matter that you or your loved ones could expire because they couldn’t get to the High Point emergency room and doctors? And, please, don’t hand me this “the move over law,” especially when there is no room on either side to go around. Folks, it’s time to wake up and think about the future, our children and grandchildren. Has common sense gone with the dollar bill? Shirley deLong

CANDIDATE SURPRISE

DEAR EDITOR, I was absolutely astonished to read a diatribe from a District 5 City Council candidate in the July 27, 2017 edition of the Rhino Times. Although I have never met the writer of this letter, I believe that he is either mistaken in his account of the Officer Cole incident or he is formulating his own “facts.” Mr. Wilkins never supported a woman batter (sic) or took the side of “a certain criminal.” Mr. Wilkins did not support a felon over a cop or vote “no” on raises for first responders. The City of Greensboro certainly does not need this individual serving on the City Council. Dennis McLoughlin

PROJECTING ON TRUMP

DEAR EDITOR, As I suspected, the blame for what has happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been leveled on President Donald Trump. This is, once again, the progressive Democrats trying to delegitimize a sitting president. They can’t get over the fact that a loser like Hillary Clinton wasn’t elected. So they continue their campaign of blaming their own sickness on others. This is what’s known as projection – blaming your own evil on others. Remarkably, the first thing they accused Trump of was not condemning the white supremacists loudly enough. My first thought was that he was having a good day and wasn’t quite ready to embarrass the Democrats. White supremacists? Oh yes, I remember now. They’re the Democrats. Weren’t the Democrats the party of slavery? And weren’t they the party of Jim Crow? And what’s this nonsense about the Ku Klux Klan? To hear them tell it you’d think it was created by Bob Dole in the 1990s. But it wasn’t. It was created by the Democrats shortly after the Civil War for the express purpose of murdering Republicans. And they murdered a lot of them. But they ran out of Republicans and had to go back to killing blacks. Besides, blacks were easier to kill – they couldn’t have guns. But the most absurd thing they do is to imply that Trump is a neo-Nazi. A neo-Nazi? Don’t these people have any understanding of what that word means? Nazi means National Socialist. A Democrat. There is no such thing as a right-wing Nazi. They’re all Democrats. Someone needs to go back and re-take high school history. These people are really sick, lying puppies. God help us if anyone of these people should ever learn that Trump left the toilet seat up in the White House. We’d never hear the end of that one. J.W. Forster

SPEAKING OUT

DEAR EDITOR, Well lets see if people call me out or if Tony Wilkins states it is not so. The first thing is Tony graduated from the school of Nancy Vaughan on how to tell half truths, take money, vote for special friends and most important is how to vote on issues and play both sides, its an ART. Mr. Wilkins voted no on the apology to the people involved in the Greensboro Massacre and that is his right but he started the games. Mr. Wilkins stated he would change his vote after reading the report. Mr. Wilkins the report came out in 2003, either you think we stupid or you are ineffective. I read the report 3 times already and I am not on council and have reached a conclusion myself. I want the people to see how Mr. Wilkins just lied to the people and follow me here now. Mr. Wilkins on Feb 3, 2015 voted no along with Zack on the historical marker for the Greensboro Massacre, so he either voted no without doing research or asking questions on what the event was about or he knows already because according to him he lived here all his life. Mr. Wilkins is playing people because he knows and if he telling the truth then he voted no in 2015 without knowing facts. Mr. Wilkins stated in the news that he was ineffective and how right he is. Mr. Wilkins in the day was a big republican, so do you really think he did not read the ultra liberal report and wait to comment. The people want to make fun of my grammer but at least I stand up. The fault for the massacre was all three. The Police did fail and that’s no big shock in the report, Rev Johnson failed also, he stirred the pot with the KKK and Police, when you stir the pot then you have to lick the spoon. The communications broke down with police because of the CWP, the KKK/Nazi Party was at fault for showing up with malice in mind, all three need to say sorry and not just the City. The city was changed and scarred because of anger and rage on all sides. So when you vote remember me, I am not scared to speak up because I do, Tony goes along to get along. Sal Leone

TRUMP SCORECARD

DEAR EDITOR, Let’s take a look at one aspect of the Trump presidency after the first seven months: Sally Yates, acting attorney general, fired; Michael Flynn, national security advisor, fired; James Comey, FBI director, fired; Mike Dubke, communications director, resigned; Walter Shaub, director of the Office of Government Ethics, resigned; Mark Corallo, spokesman for Trump’s legal team, resigned; Sean Spicer, press secretary, resigned; Michael Short, assistant press secretary, resigned; Reince Priebus, chief of staff, resigned; Anthony Scaramucci, a second communications director, fired; two business advisory panels, disbanded by Trump after numerous CEO resignations; Steve Bannon, chief strategist, left; George Sifikis, director of the Office of Public Liaison, left; Carl Ichan, special business advisor, left; President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, all resigned. And the above list does not include the number of people who withdrew their nominations: four for FBI director; one for Department of Labor; two for secretary of the Army; one for secretary of the Navy; one for deputy secretary of commerce; one for secretary of the Treasury; one for chairman of the FDIC; two for national security advisor; one for Office of Drug Control Policy; one for spokesperson for the National Security Council; and one for the Department of Justice. So much for making America great again. Bob Kollar

SERIOUSLY HEATING UP

DEAR EDITOR, On August 7, 2017, The Guardian newspaper reported that “Staff at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) have been told to avoid using the term climate change in their work.”  USDA officials were instructed to use the phrase “weather extremes.” The above directive is an example of the insidious way in which we as a people are being deliberately and intentionally duped by our government into thinking climate change is not a big deal. The heating of the Earth and its atmosphere is a huge deal, a life and death issue that affects all living things: humans, frogs, birds, trees, insects, fish and everything else. Words matter.  Let us not be lulled into complacence and inaction by euphemisms and paternalistic assurances from government officials who want to pull the wool over our eyes. The Earth is heating up.  And it’s serious. Maureen Parker

POT CALLING KETTLE?

DEAR EDITOR, As the wave of hatred and vitriol for Confederate heroes reaches a crescendo, ask yourself if liberals are really the saintly paragons of tolerance that they claim to be. As we witness the 21st century’s Brownshirts destroying and degrading monuments to men who are infinitely their superior, we wonder about the motives of the pajama boy snowflakes who are so very brave – when it comes to kicking inanimate pieces of bronze. They will never be one-tenth the man that Robert E. Lee was, despite their theatrical and violent virtue signalling. Perhaps they are trying to impress their girlfriends, or boyfriends. If Scotland’s referendum on seceding from the UK had succeeded, do you think the British army, navy and air force would have immediately attacked, invaded and subdued the Scottish rebels’ homeland and destroyed its economy for a generation? The Confederate states asked only to be allowed to leave the Union peacefully, a right presumed to be implicit in the Constitution. The hubris of the federal government could not allow such a peaceful separation, and so it waged war on its fellow Americans. The belligerent Yankees reject the characterization of the war as the War of Northern Aggression, but the sentiment is true.
